Lorain Skating Club travels to rinks and arenas to compete in their divisions.  There are a couple kinds of competitive roller skating:

  • Dance Skating

Dance - Think ballroom dancing on skates.  Dance patterns are set in a specific configuration and tempo of music generated from the iconic roller rink organ.  You can compete with a partner (Team Dance) or solo (solo dance).

  • Figure Skating

Figures - Unlike ice skating, figure skating on wheels is not jumping and spinning.  Figures is sort of like a game of chess on roller skates.  Skaters split their wheels over the black circular lines on the floor.  They are judged on posture, control and speed.  Some figures are forward-facing, some are backwards.  Some are a combination.  Smaller, more difficult figures are called "loops" and use a more difficult pattern.

  • Freestyle

Freestyle - Jumps, spins, choreography.  Freestyle skating is popular and is saved for the most creative, agile and most confident roller skaters.  You've got the floor to yourself and you are judged on specific maneuvers required in various events.

  • Freedance

Freedance -  A combination of freestyle and dance.  You don't have to do complicated jumps, but you have to express your artistic side through your movements and to your selection of music.

  • Precision Skating

Precision Skating - multiple skaters on the floor at the same time doing a variety of different types of skating moving in unity and choreographed as one.

  • Speed Skating

Speed skating - go fast and turn left, but it requires physical endurance and agility.
